Whale and Dolphin Watching in Ballena Marine National Park.
The activity begins by arriving at our office, the meeting point where we offer a small snack of coffee, juice, pastries, and bananas while waiting to complete the group. Once the group is ready, the guide takes you from the office to the beach, approximately 300 meters to the entrance of Ballena Marine National Park, where we’ll board the boat to start the tour. During the tour, we travel through Ballena Marine National Park, Whale Rock, Three Sisters Rocks, Cavern Windows, and the Punta Uvita Tombolo. We visit a natural bird sanctuary like Whale Rock, where you can observe resident or migratory birds and some reptiles such as green iguanas and lizards.During the activity, if the weather conditions allow, snorkeling will be done in the coral reefs of those wild areas. Whale and dolphin sightings are included—there’s a 95% chance of seeing sea turtles. At the end of the activity, we return to the same starting point.
Whale Season in Costa Rica
Humpback whales are seen during two seasons: from December to the end of March, coming from the northern hemisphere, and from the southern hemisphere, which can be seen from the first weeks of July until the end of October. The most commonly observed are humpback whales (also known as yubartas), known for their long migrations from the north and south sides. Occasionally, Bryde’s whales and pilot whales can be spotted. Dolphins are seen all year round about 95% of the time. The most common ones on the Pacific coast are bottlenose dolphins, commonly known as ‘bufeos,’ and spotted dolphins. The chances of seeing cetaceans are quite high, but sightings are not guaranteed every day since we cannot be certain of their exact location.
